Through this programme 50 restaurants and cafes would have been trained on measures that they are to introduce so that they reduce their energy and water consumption footprint and create less waste. This project allows for strong foundations for improved sustainable tourism. Gozo experiences a large number of same day visitors – both domestic and international.

This large influx of daily visitors generates considerable litter: by noon all of the major village, beach, and tourist areas look shabby and dirty as bins overflow with litter. Smart bins based on an Internet of Things (IOT) network will be introduced to allow effective management. The intention is to roll out smart bins in Victoria, Xlendi, Ramla Bay, Mgarr ix-Xini and Marsalforn. Roll out to other tourist hotspots will be achieved by 2025. The smart bins will be supported by the appropriate management and operations structure to ensure that these bins are emptied within defined service standards once they signal that they are full.
