Vitex Agnus Castus

Chaste Tree

A deciduous shrub or small tree, 1-6 metres tall native to the Mediterranean region.  It is an indigenous species for the Maltese Islands and found growing along valleys and wetland habitats.  In the past it was used in basketry by our forefathers.  As an ornamental plant it can be used for its interesting foliage and late summer flowers which attract butterflies and many other pollinating insects.

Leaves are aromatic and textured at the border, compound consisting of 5-7 finger-shaped leaflets, 2 – 10 cm long, dark green above and covered with white silky hair below.

Flowers are abundant, borne in summer between June and September and blueish-violet in colour (rarely pink or white).

Propagation Notes

  1. Place the seeds in lukewarm water and leave them there for one or two days.
  2. Collect and use the seeds that sink under the water (those that remain on the surface are not good).
  3. Prepare a mixture of half garden or field soil and compost.
  4. Sow the seeds 1–2 cm under the soil in shallow pots and place them in a sheltered spot in the sun.
  5. Sow at the beginning of May.
  6. Water lightly and regularly so that the soil always remains moist.
  7. They germinate about 2–3 weeks after sowing.
